Image
2014 Black & White Illustration Directory PDF Tah Dah - the 2014 Black & White Illustration Directory! With the current rage in publishing centered around Middle Grade, Young Adult and even New Adult Books, we thought we'd give our 2014 members a chance to showoff their black and white illustrations. We envisioned this as a section in the 2014 illustrator directory but we gathered enough illustrations from our members to warrant it's own PDF Booklet. Please click here to flip thru the 2014 Black & White Illustration Directory CBIG Pages. To create the cover we asked members to submit cover art and than the submissions were voted on by the 2014 membership.  The four winners are: Yuko Katakawa , Patricia Keeler , Allyn Howard , Barbara DiLorenzo . The remaining cover submissions were used throughout the book as spot art on the table of contents and member index pages. Please go to CBIG-NYC.com to click on the link to our Illustrator Directories:  2014 Bl...

Sara Kahn - Seasons, Rhymes in Time arrived from the printer!

Image
The book I spent the last two years illustrating: Seasons, Rhymes in Time arrived from the printer. I like the way they printed the spot UV on the cover, it makes the leaves shiny and the white part matte. I wrote a blog post about my illustration process, the blog post address is: http://sara-kahn.blogspot.com/2013/05/the-next-big-thing-global-blog-tour.html

Mother Goose - Sara Kahn

Image
I chose these three Mother Goose Rhymes to illustrate, because they are about Robins, one of my favorite birds. These illustrations are watercolors on 300lbs Arches watercolor paper. They are all 24"x 30"framed Title: Kindness: Illustration for the Mother Goose Rhyme: The little robin grieves When the snow is on the ground,For the trees have no leaves, And no berries can be found. The air is cold, the worms are hid; For robin here what can be done? Let's strow around some crumbs of bread, And then he'll live till snow is gone. Mother Goose Illustration: Kindness © SaraKahn 2012 Title: Rhythm: Illustration for Mother Goose Rhyme: Little Robin Red-breast Sat upon a rail, Needle, naddle, went his head, Wiggle, waggle, went his tail. Dickens - Donna Miskend

Image
Marley's Ghost ©Donna Miskend 2012   Scrooge sees his old partner Marley's ghost in the door knocker. Here Lies Ebenezer Scrooge ©Donna Miskend 2012  I chose to focus attention on the moment when Scrooge sees his name on the tombstone in a neglected cemetery, destined to be forgotten if he doesn't change his ways. Both illustrations are from Dickens'  A Christmas Carol. Dickens Laura Goetz

Image
c 2012 Laura Goetz"Please sir, may I have some more?" Like many fans of Oliver Twist, I remember the famous request, "Please Sir I want some more?" Oliver an orphan is in a workhouse with desperately hungry boys, asks Mr. Bumble, the parish beadle for another portion of gruel. I chose to illustrate the poor and less fortunate children in this scene, because unfortunately, hunger is still a reality in today's society. See more of my art at http://lauraspencil.blogspot.com I am honored my pastel illustration was selected for the front of the postcard invitation.  The back of the postcard has more CBIG exhibition/ event news and info for the Yonkers Riverfront Library . Dickens - Sara Kahn

Image
Sara Kahn's illustrations based upon a short story by Charles Dickens What I like about this short story from Dickens, is the way he establishes an emotional rhythm. Later, I found out that a literary critic:  Brander Matthews  thought that this is one of Dickens' best short stories. He thought that it was closest to Dickens' heart since it was written two years after Dickens' sister died.  http://www.bartleby.com/195/1012.html In my researches for Dickens, I also found two other interesting websites: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unKuZ2wlNdw   http://www.museumoflondon.org.uk/Resources/app/Dickens_webpage/index.html Here are my three illustrations for this story: They are 24"x 30" framed, I made them with watercolor pencils, gouache and acrylic paints.
