New Book ~ Ginger Nielson

Image
I just completed work for a new book that is due out this fall.  "The Phantom Poodle of Rainy Pass" keeps two young girls on the lookout for a mysterious dark figure in the Alaskan winter.  Based upon a true story told by John 'the Poodleman' Suter to the late Dan Levinson, the book is geared toward 6-12 year olds but will certainly hold the interest of younger and older readers.  John Suter was the first musher in the Iditarod to hitch standard poodle dogs to his racing sled.

Sara Kahn - Seasons, Rhymes in Time arrived from the printer!

Image
The book I spent the last two years illustrating: Seasons, Rhymes in Time arrived from the printer. I like the way they printed the spot UV on the cover, it makes the leaves shiny and the white part matte. I wrote a blog post about my illustration process, the blog post address is: http://sara-kahn.blogspot.com/2013/05/the-next-big-thing-global-blog-tour.html

TRUCK STOP Book Launch- Melissa Iwai

Image
I’m thrilled to announce the release of  TRUCK STOP , written by  Anne Rockwell  and illustrated by me!  The official Viking pub date is this Thursday, but our blog tour started yesterday.   TRUCK STOP  is a fun picture book for young kids that celebrates all the different trucks and their drivers who gather for breakfast every day at the young narrator’s family’s truck stop diner. When I first was offered the manuscript in 2011, I was so excited to see it was written by Anne.  I’ve been a big fan for a long time.  She`s written over 100 children’s books for all ages, on topics ranging from boats, history, mythology, to the first day of school, bugs, to the seasons.  Go check out her collection of books  here !  Needless to say, I didn’t need much time to think it over and said “yes” to my editor immediately. Most people don’t realize it, but usually the author and illustrator don’t meet or collaborate at all on the book.  Exceptions are made, of course, if they are married, re

Vicky Rubin - Book Expo America auction piece

Image
The Tailors and the Snail , Mother Goose Rhyme This is my donation for the Children's Book Silent Auction at Book Expo. It's to raise funds to fight children's book censorship. There is also a weeklong online silent auction beginning May 18. The print illustrates the Mother Goose rhyme The Tailors and the Snail . To read the rhyme on my Web site,  click here . Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are was banned when it came out for its new and, for the times, disturbing content, and he battled with editors for four years over the content before they agreed to publish it.  Read about the censorship here . His In the Night Kitchen has also been frequently challenged because of its depiction of nudity. That's why book lovers need to continue this fight. Here is info about the auction: http://abffesilentauction.wordpress.com/online-auction/
