Winter ~ Little Red Riding Hood - Ginger Nielson

Image
This winter's red riding hood is a bit different from other paintings on the subject.  As little red had never seen a wolf before she had no idea how evil one could be.

Tomie Illo - Ginger Nielson

Image
© Ginger Nielson This was my entry to the Tomie de Paola challenge. I actually had another illustration in mind, but this one was the one I submitted. Sometimes I wonder if I rethink things too much. I loved working on the challenge and look forward to this each year. I am not sure if the fact that the child is sneezing the critters right off his quilt quite got through, but that is what was intended.

A New book written by Rena Jones, that I illustrated has just been released.  Rena's rhymes cover an amazing array of animal classes.  Did you know that a group of apes is called a generation, or that a collection of raccoons is called a gaze?  Much more fun and classification facts are geared to all ages, but in particular the K-2 crowd.

Gunther ~ Ginger Nielson

Image
Although I have illustrated many books, this picture book is the first for me as both author and illustrator. Gunther the Underwater Elephant has been a long time coming.  The first paintings were done when my children were all at home and in school. They are all now married and we have two little grandchildren to add to the family. I think the long years in between Gunther's beginning, the rejections, suggestions, edits, and the final manuscript and illustrations for his book were worth the wait.  I hope many will enjoy the story of a little elephant who becomes an unintentional explorer and a hero as well. The book is available on Amazon.com, at the 4RV Publishing LLC site, and at any and all bookstores for the asking. The ISBN is helpful for the bookstore: 978-0-9832740-2-5

DAD - Ginger Nielson

Ginger Nielson's ~ Tip for Creating a Digital File Cabinet

Image
I used to have numerous sketchbooks, loose sketches and paintings hanging around in various places in my studio. Finding exactly that perfect sketch I may have done a year ago was...  let's just say ... nearly impossible. My solution for all those many graphics, illustrations, sketches and reference photos used to be to put them all in a steel file cabinet, or have my sketch books scattered in various places in my studio. It began to be impossible to find an exact sketch I knew I had "somewhere"  so I created a digital file cabinet in my computer.   Every file now has a place.  I collected my scans, paintings, photos and transferred the into appropriately named folders and sub folders and put the whole batch on an external computer drive.  This way I have a portable file of all my work that does not clutter up the valuable space on my computer and is safe from any unforseen crashes.   A complete article explaining the how and the why is on my website if...
